Writing buddy: spelling and wording help in any app
Pinchy can fix spelling and grammar while you type, in every app, and tidy up a text you select.
What to ask for
- “Fix my spelling while I type.” After one yes he keeps going in every app until you tell him to stop.
- Select a paragraph and press the writing shortcut: he offers a corrected or tidied version.
- “Stop correcting me in the terminal.” He adds that app to the list he never touches.
- “Only fix typos, don’t change my wording.” He switches to spelling only.
How it works
- Small fixes land in place with an Undo. Bigger changes arrive as a quiet suggestion you accept or ignore.
- For a selection he pastes the fixed text over it and puts your clipboard back. In read-only places, like a PDF viewer, you get Copy instead.
- Watching while you type uses the desktop’s accessibility service to read the text field you are in. Apps that were already open may need a restart the first time.
- Writing help uses a small, fast model by default.
Settings
- Settings → Voice & writing → Writing buddy: the live grammar helper on or off, fix as I type, make small fixes for me, how long to wait after you stop typing, apps where he never helps, watch while I type, help for selected text and its shortcut, what help to offer (fix spelling and tidy up, spelling only, tidy up), Neovim, the model.
- Settings → Voice & writing → Writing buddy → Privacy: apps he never watches.
Limits
- “Watch while I type” is off until you switch it on.
- Some apps cannot be read by other programs. He tells you when an app can’t be helped.
